Well-Testing

For over 100 Years drill stem testing has been at the heart of defining the commercial viability of any exploration well. Being able to isolate and then flow specific parts of the formation whilst recording critical parameters such as pressure and temperature at reservoir depth remain vital to the development of an asset.

Leading Magnetic Design have deployed its array of wireless communication technologies to enable real-time control and feedback of these tests in order to facilitate rapid decision making and safeguard the integrity of the well.

The LMD GEM telemetry system allows the user to communicate from surface to the heart of the drill stem testing BHA using our fast robust and low power, two-way electromagnetic telemetry system. Proven in the drilling and production environments, real-time sensor data is transmitted from downhole to surface giving instant indications of reservoir productivity. This data is critical for the decision-making process of what happens next to the well with the transmitted data supporting multimillion dollar decisions about the well and field development or in the worst case, plug and abandonment.

The GEM transceiver can be interfaced directly to 3rd party electronics and sensors using our transparent bridge protocols or into the Faraday-Link transceiver for further data distribution around the local network.

The Leading Magnetic Design Extended Reach Repeater can massively increase the already impressive range of GEM allowing it to transmit through difficult formations such as carbonates and salts without any complicated antenna setup. Optimally placed higher up the drill-string, the Repeater’s EM signal can travel deeper and further horizontally making every well a prime GEM telemetry candidate. The repeater can now be supplied as a short collar giving full bore access to DST BHA and other hardware below it.

The modern DST BHA is now a complex and connected array of sensors, valves and other flow control devices which allow for a more complex testing program over multiple reservoir zones simultaneously whilst eliminating multiple trips, reducing costs and risk to the well.. A complex BHA requires a more flexible and highly robust, short to medium range transmission system capable of capturing data inside and outside of the BHA as well transmitting over multiple metallic barriers which could present an obstruction to other telemetry types including pressure pulse, acoustic and standard EM.

The Faraday-Link magnetic telemetry is the ideal solution to construct complex downhole networks without worrying about restrictions inherent in the BHA or caused by interactions with the environment such as produced fluids or formation. Transparent bridge protocols allows sensors and devices from multiple providers to be easily integrated into a single seamless well test solution including depth correlation and sampling as well as the DST hardware.

Our team offers bespoke telemetry solutions, optimising the system to the customer’s unique application requirements.
